[1ST CASE] - keeping busy under strange circumstances

[Sitting on the porch of your lovely island home is someone you likely haven't encountered before. It's a woman, likely in her late 30's or early 40's, in a lab coat and some odd white, orange, and black lab uniform. There is a pair of goggles hanging around her neck. She has weird wing-shaped objects over her ears. The back of her coat reads S.P.D., and a tag on the collar of her outfit reads the same.

She is currently disassembling your toaster.]

[Oh, what an interesting woman. Maybe she'd gotten lost, but chasing her off was not something he'd do.

He steps closer to--WHOA WHAT THE HECK?! What was she doing?! HEY! PEOPLE NEED THAT TO EAT, YOU KNOW.

He'll just stare and gawk as you work on your...experiment~]

[She takes apart the power supply and frowns at it.]

...Do people still really build such inefficient things?

[She sighs and picks up the mug next to her, drinking from it, and setting it back down before unscrewing another part. Looks like she also made coffee at some point.]

Fixing your terribly inefficient toaster.

Once I finish this I'm moving on to the coffee maker. I'd have done that first but I needed to actually make a pot of coffee before I could get started on anything.

It worked but it's input was far greater than it's output, and it's calibration was terrible. It will work much better when I'm done with it.

I am, among other things.

[She sighs and starts putting parts of the toaster back together, rewiring things, getting rid of unnecessary parts.]

Someone like me has to wear a lot of hats, sometimes. But otherwise nothing would get done, so it's unavoidable.

I'm sorry, I'm not very good at understanding mechanical things very well. [His tone is apologetic over the lack of knowledge he has in the subject.]

You mean, like taking on lots of differents tasks and jobs, right? [If she was speaking figuratively, that is.]

That's all right. You're young. I wouldn't expect you to be able to tell that sort of thing just by looking.

[She nods.]

That's right. Engineer, mechanic, doctor, general voice of reason among the uncontrollably reckless... But it's not like they don't appreciate what I do, even if they don't always listen.

[Sadly it's hard to wear literal hats when you have crazy wing ear things.]

Why don't you have someone to help you?

[He takes a seat on the porch, putting a little distance between them.]

Oh there are plenty of maintenance crews that work on the Dekamachines, but I'm still pretty heavily involved in all of that work. And direct assistants in the lab would just do more harm than good, really.

[The woman smiles a bit, screwing two parts back together.]

It's more than enough work looking after the kids I've got, much less any more who'd probably be just as reckless. That seems to be the curse of being part of the Earth Branch.

[Tilts his head a little] Dekamachines...?

That does sound like a lot of work. And responsibility. [sigh]

Large machines used in our police work. They're rally for extreme cases, but we've gotten a lot of mileage out of them due to the machines Abrera sold.

It's not like I'm the only one staffed for engineering or medical. There's a lot of staff that work in those departments. But I'm head of engineering. It's what I know best, and what I love most. And when it comes to Doggie and the others being hurt, I feel wrong if it's not me taking care of them.

[She screws the casing of the toaster back together and smiles.]

We all have a lot of work, and a lot of responsibility. It's our job to protect the Earth from criminals. But they are the ones who put their lives at risk every day. So the least I can do is make sure that the things that keep them safe are working properly.

Oh. Almost like an elite, technologically superior police force then? Could you make one yourself, or would you need a base to work off of first?

[Throws a toaster at the toaster.]

[The woman quickly ducks, then frowns at the toaster that crashes against the outer wall of the house since she'll probably have to fix that one too. She turns to scold whoever threw it at her...

...and stares for a moment. She then puts down the toaster parts and gets up, walks to Robo-Ky until they are tow to toe, looks him up and down, and then digs a business card out of her coat and offers it to him.]
