2nd Transmutation-Botany

[Early in the morning, back on the beach he arrived on, Fletcher had been tending to a small, loose plant he'd come across on the ground. It looked like it was dying, and losing its greenery color. He could've sworn there was a garden at the mansion, so how did the poor dying plant get there?

After a few hours he's drifted off to sleep on the beach without knowing it, and you might notice a strange drawing near the sleeping, and exhausted boy, with the plant in the center of it if you happen to come by.]

He seems to enjoy it. He knows a lot about food and how it affects people. He never really seems "Happy", but he might just be that kind of person. I knew someone like that at home.

The food is very good though. Much better than what I usually ate at home.

[Neither he, nor Shotaro, can cook at all. It's honestly a wonder these two are capable of surviving on their own.]

[pout] Maybe he knew someone that liked cooking as much as him and he misses them? [This was just a hunch, of course.]

...Well, as long as you're here, please make sure to take care of your health. You don't want to get caught up in your work too much that you allow yourself to constantly miss meals like before, you could get sick.

Maybe... I don't really know much about him. But I think it's more likely that he is just the sort of person who doesn't express things openly.

[Tendo reminds him a lot of Terui Ryu, and as much as he likes both Tendo and Terui, spending all of this time with Tendou has made it very clear to him that his mother was very wrong and that he and Terui would never have been compatible partners.]

I'm getting better about it. Normally, Shotaro would just come and get me when it was time to eat or sleep or go somewhere. I didn't have to keep track of it myself. My partner handled it all for me.

Now I have to do all of that for myself. It's different, and it's taken getting used to. But I think I will be fine.

Oh, I understand...

You were dependent on Shotaro for most of the daily things you had to do?

More than I realized, before ending up here without him. I suppose he was dependent on me as well for a great many things... It was the nature of our partnership.

We were as good as one person. We functioned as two parts of a whole.

He had already learned to get by without me if needed. I left him for a year, and in that time he thought it was permanent, given that I was dead. But, since I was dead, I did not learn to make those same adjustments.

It is what I am learning now.

[smile] I'm positive you'll learn to adjust to things on your own just like he did and he'll be proud of you when you return home.

[Even if he had no way of knowing, he still wanted to believe that somehow they might be able to go back to their worlds again. That he...could see Russell again. And that made his smile fade.]

...Brother...[His head slumped and he fought back the tears that threatened to fall. No, that wouldn't solve anything, and he couldn't keep being a crybaby over everything.]

Yes... I'd like him to be proud of me. To show him that I haven't fallen behind.

[He watches Fletcher, able to vaguely piece together what he's thinking about through the context of the situation. He smiles, reaching out to pat Fletcher on the shoulder.]

You'll see your brother again. And I'll see my partner again. Believe in Lady Eureka, okay? I talked to her once, and she told me some very interesting things.

If we all believe in her, and she becomes strong enough, I'm sure she won't need us anymore and will send us home.

I don't think that's possible since you study new things a lot.

[He smiles once again, to let Philip know he appreciated the gesture.]

...You talked to her?

It's not just about knowing things though... I'll always know more than Shotaro. I have access to more information. That's my purpose in our partnership.

But we need to be in synch. If one of us falls behind, then it hurts both of us.

[Philip nods, smiling a bit.]

I met her in the woods. I think it's because I've been studying about her so much, that she was able to find me. I've noticed that I've had access to more and more search entries lately...

She said that if you believe in witches, it gives them power. That's my guess as to why we're here. So if enough of us believe in her, maybe she'll become strong enough that she won't need us, and will send us home.

I see.

Oh! Maybe she's aiding you in some way? Or, its because she's slowly getting stronger. I haven't seen a witch before, maybe miss Lady Eureka is trying to change that... [He ponders on this]

Our partnership is... complicated. I mean it quite literally when I say we're one detective.

I'm certain that she wants me to find things now that she knows I'm looking. I'm not sure what her overall ambition is though. Not as of yet anyway. There aren't witches or magic where I come from, so as far as looking at it as something real goes, it's a very new subject to me.

But the conversation eased a lot of my worries. I don't need to rush now.

[There was so much he wanted to ask Philip, but he felt that trying to pry so much all at once would not only be invasive but also because there were some things that people might want to keep to themselves.]

So this is the first time you've seen a witch? Did you ever hear stories about them?

[This is maybe the one person that most of it wouldn't bother. His life is information, and giving it out is his job. Certain things might feel prying, but Philip isn't much of a secretive person.]

I've heard about them, but as far as I've always known they were simply works of fiction. But I have entries on witches, and on Eureka. If the Bookshelves say that witches are real, then they are.

So I believe.

[That must be how she was able to pull people from their worlds and bring them here, it would be strange if a human were able to do that.]

But, won't it be hard to convince everyone on the island to believe in her? [nervously] I think...there are things that people don't want to believe, and they might reject it. It must take a lot of work.

I feel bad for her...

That's what she said to me... And when I talked to Tendou about it, he refused to acknowledge the possibility, even though there is very clear evidence. He said he wanted to see her first, but unless he believes in her being a witch, I don't think he can.

[Philip frowns a bit and nods.]

I want to do what I can, for everyone's sake. I've just never had to convince anyone of anything before, so I'm not sure how to do it. At home, everyone just took what I said at face value and accepted it.

That's why I planned to research it thoroughly. With enough evidence, even Tendou won't be able to deny my findings. Then if enough people believe and she gets power, we can go home.

Even if Shotaro doesn't know I'm gone, I miss him a lot. So I want to go home.

That's a great idea! With a lot of evidence, he'd have to believe you.

[Thoughtfully] I hope I get to see her sometime, it would make a nice story to tell my brother one day.

[He shakes the negative thoughts away before they surface.] Um, Philip...if you need any help with trying to get any proof or research, I don't mind helping sometimes. W-we can be friends too, if you want.

[Philip nods, seeming pleased that he at least has someone who will listen to him like a sane person. God everyone here ins nuts half the time.]

If you believe in her, and that she's a witch, I'm sure you'll run into her. I never expected to find her, but there she was.

I'd like to be friends. That sounds nice. Do you know anything about book restoration? I'm about to make a bit of a project out of it. I found some old books in a library that are in bad shape, but they might have some good information.

I'd like to tell Shotaro about all of this too. He probably won't believe me, but at least watching him react should be entertaining.

[That might happen when you're stranded on an island too long.]

Oh, I could help with trying to fix them, books shouldn't good to waste.

[He laughs.] Because he'd be really surprised?

It's possible your alchemy might come in handy... Books are paper and that's made from plants, so you would be able to use it, yes?

[Philip laughs a bit and nods.]

I don't lie. I have no reason to. So he's used to taking everything I say as fact, because it generally is. But something like this seems far too strange to be real, even by our standards, so he'd think I was trying to fool him somehow, but I don't tell lies. So he would get confused.

Especially since, if Lady Eureka is to be believed, there's some sort of time-space displacement at work that makes it seem like we aren't even gone.

[Nod] I should be able to use some basic alchemy to restore the damage, are they in very bad shape?

I guess that would be difficult to accept all of a sudden. But a time-space distortion...could that mean that it might be possible that no time has passed in our worlds since our arrival here?

Many in the library seemed beyond repair. Those that I thought I could restore, I brought home with me. Though if it works on them, we may want to see what we can do about the ones in the library still.

From the way she put it, it didn't sound like time was "stopped" in the worlds we came from. She said we "still exist" in our world, and that it's "split into a different reality" where we're all still there...

I don't understand it fully, but so long as Shotaro doesn't think that I've died again, I can rest easy.

[smiles] Oh, okay! I'll do my best.

...I don't really understand her abilities, but hopefully its not something troubling then.

Thank you. It will be a very big help. Those book may have valuable information.

It's not something I fully understand either, but it means I don't have to rush. I miss Shotaro and the others, and I want to get home to them, but as long as they aren't worried, I can take my time and make sure my research is done properly.

[No to mention finding time for all of that eating and sleeping he was previously neglecting.]

[He nervously averts his gaze down at his lap] Um...I don't want to be intrusive, but...can I ask you something, Philip?

[Philip straightens up a bit. He's not really used to this kind of behavior, but he nods.]
